Día de los Muertos 1998     The Deader the Better

      Compiled by Judy(Deadeye)West

Dia de los Muertos is one of the better re-makes of cultural rituals that we do in the Mission. This Pre- Columbian event to honor the dead has been adapted and re-incarnated by San Francisco hipsters. Partake in the ritual celebrations, memorials, artisan demonstrations, or undertake a tour of any of the galleries listed here, and you'll probably agree DDM iss a hell of a lot more exciting than the Trick-or-Treat festivities other neighborhoods celebrate a few days earlier. Looking for holiday events specially created for children? See the Mission Branch Library listing below.

Also, during this Mission-based holiday, be sure to check out the numerous merchant window displays on Valencia.

Here's what's up for DDM 98:

Participants are encouraged to bring gifts and offerings to be placed in any of the five major altars which will be erected at Garfield Park; candles, flowers, incense, photos of loved ones, decorations, food, fruit, sweets, scents, music poems and ritual objects. These gifts and objects represent the tools and building blocks in the joining of the necessary forces for the creation of bridges between ourselves, our families, our loved ones, our past, our present and our future, as we recognize, honor and celebrate Death as an integral part of life. Artists' Call For Entries for the Dia de los Muertos Exhibit. In past centuries, Dia de los Muertos was not only celebrated to commemorate loved ones who had passed away, but also as an occasion to express social discontent: common people used powerful images to of death to protest against corruption, repression, and economic injustice. The political impetus behind the occasion has become diffused over time, and today is approached more as pseudo-folklore. Balazo/Mission Badlands Gallery seeks to revive this aspect of Dia de los Muertos by sponsoring an exhibit that pays tribute to this more subversive spirit of the tradition in a contemporary context. The Gallery is seeking artwork that utilizes images of the dead to explore contemporary social problems that reflect the big picture. Call the gallery for more information on submitting work for The deadline for submissions is Oct. 23rd, early submissions given precedence. Tel: 920-0896.

Artisan's demonstrations are October 24 & 25, October 30 & November 2. Encantada celebrates its first year on Valencia Street November 2nd, at 4pm. Tel: 642-3939.
