IPTC INFO
CaptionDionysus Triumphal Procession This mosaic probably from the so-called "House of Virgil " in Sousse depicts the majestic procession of the triumphant god who is standing his head wreathed in vine-leaves holding a long thyrsus lance in one hand and the reins of his chariot in the other. Alongside him stands a Victory. At the left of the chariot walks a maenad striking a tambourine. In the foreground are two secondary figures Dionysis as a child and a panther drinking from a vase. Flocks of birds make a border above the grapevine foliage which is filled with grape-gathering Cupids. 3rd c. ADSousse Museum.
