CaptionA hallmark partnership between Jewish group B'nai Brith Canada the GTA Faith Alliance and the Caribana festival to open 70 new learning centres and a music festival for black youth in the city was announced in mid-May a few weeks earlier than planned when a media frenzy erupted over the denied entry to Malik Zulu Shabazz the leader of the New Black Panther Party and a proud anti-semitic to address a rally. Black Youth Taking Action whose motto on its website says: "Stay black and don't sell out." did hold a rally titled "Education not Incarceration." to demand a black-focused school curriculum an end to the Safe Schools Act and halting construction of a massive prison in Brampton. While Mr. Shabazz never made it to Canada the rally did go ahead and in a Tuesday-morning press conference journalists peppered BYTA leader Nkem Anizor with questions about Mr. Shabazz. Ms. Anizor who globeandmail.com reporter OMAR EL AKKAD described as "a charismatic and confrontational 26-year-old" - addressed everything from the Toronto District School Board to the "Jewish lobby " which she blamed for Mr. Shabazz being refused entry into Canada. "They think there's no positive role model in this city and that disturbs me " said Rev. Don Meredith chair of the GTA Faith Alliance one of the groups that objected to Mr. Shabazz's presence. "There is credible leadership in this city." Mr. Meredith was one of the speakers at a press conference centred on the announcement of two joint initiatives: a new music festival called "Imagine " and 70 new "e-learning" facilities aimed primarily at the city's black young people. In a way both B'nai Brith and BYTA achieved some of their goals this week - the Jewish group successfully lobbied to stop Mr. Shabazz from coming to Canada and the black youth group managed to turn what would have almost certainly been a low-key rally into one of the most media-hyped events in Toronto this year. -http://globeandmail.workopolis.com/servlet/Content/fa
