CaptionExcelsior neighbors Deadheads rock bands and even the mayor will converge on the newly christened Jerry Garcia Amphitheater on Saturday for a rollicking dedication ceremony. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department board voted unanimously in July to rename the 2 000-seat Greek theater in McLaren Park after the late Grateful Dead guitarist who grew up not far from the theater in the Excelsior District. The picturesque theater surrounded by oak trees in the center of the 330-acre park was formerly named the McLaren Park Amphitheater after John McLaren superintendent of Golden Gate Park from 1887 to 1943 who landscaped Golden Gate Park. The only change to the theater built in 1970 will be on the sign said district spokeswoman Rose Dennis. But with the new name the district hopes more people will rent the facility which was extensively remodeled and upgraded in 2000. It's currently the site of the annual Jerry Day music and arts festival a celebration of Garcia's life and musical contributions. Jerry Day is usually held in late July or early August near Garcia's birthday and the anniversary of his death. Garcia spent much of his childhood at 87 Harrington St. not far from the park. At the time of his death a decade ago he was working on a memoir since published called "Harrington Street." The dedication celebration will feature performances by Jefferson Starship and Jefferson Galactic Family Reunion Mystery Cats Grapefruit Ed Acoustic the Little Wheels Band Jerry Rigged Michael John Ahern David Gans and Ben Fong-Torres. The master of ceremonies will be Wavy Gravy. In addition to music there will be an auction of Garcia's artwork to help fund future improvements to the amphitheater. Members of the Board of Supervisors Assemblyman Leland Yee and other officials will be there as well as the mayor who says his iPod is well stocked with Garcia's music. The event is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at 40 John Shelley Drive.
