Since its inception Aquarela has been under the artistic leadership of Maria Amabilis Souza. With Aquarela you can enjoy the spirit of Carnaval with Samba from Rio de Janeiro Afro rhythms from Salvador da Bahia Frevo from the Carnaval traditions of the Brazilian North-East and many other regional dance forms including Capoeira presentations. Maria Souza and other dancers also holds regular Samba classes in Berkeley. Aquarela Dance Troupe has been amongst the most popular since its reception performing regularly and mounting a spectacular 30 perfomer 15 number extravaganza from the annual Brazil Ball in February. Aquarela's Maria and Silvana Sousa were elected official San Francisco Carnaval Queens in 1995 and Silvana 1996.
