CaptionASK A CRITIC: After creating the visually stunning new San Francisco Museum of Modern Art the museum's management has moved in the opposite direction with the planned addition presenting a huge bland warehouse design one that neither complements the present museum nor creates an attractive addition. Couldn't the architects have come up with a more creative effort that enhances the space and doesn't present the old museum as a beautiful pinprick of a jewel upon a huge bland behemoth? Please encourage the architects to go back to the drawing board. --- Stephen Somerstein Mountain View --- --- ---Art Critic KENNETH BAKER RESPONDS: In my experience architects don't listen to critics. They listen to clients and client input in this case surely includes many voices from the museum director and board to curators and conservators to the people in charge of institutional development membership and security. Whatever chord such a chorus strikes will tend toward resolution in a bland harmony. Then again SFMOMA has begun to define itself as recorder of art of the latter half of the 20th century and all that follows. The standard vehicle for presentation of art in this period has been "the white cube " as Brian O'Doherty dubbed conventional gallery space. Institutions have seen - and already canonized - enough bizarre variety in forms and staging of new art since 1950 to know that they need to be as flexible as possible. That sort of flexibility in architectural terms often presents just the bland impression you complain about. You have only to enter a disaster such as the Denver Art Museum's Daniel Libeskind building - where right angles are dizzyingly unavailable - to learn fear of what an architect can do to an institution in the name of unconventionality. --- --- --- I have never much liked SFMOMA's Mario Botta building. Still I will be sorry to see his central staircase sacrificed to expansion. Such integrity as the building has will suffer as a result
