IPTC INFO
CaptionPier 24 a 28 000-square-foot warehouse directly under the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is largest exhibition space in the country dedicated exclusively to photography. A gift to the community by.Andy Pilara a succussful investment-fund manager who got hooked on serious art photography in 2003 when he bought his first Diane Arbus print. The museum admits only 20 visitors per two-hour time slot 10 a.m.-noon 1 p.m.-3 p.m 3:15 p.m.-5:15 p.m. from Monday through Thursday along with a few small school or museum groups and reservations must be made online.  It is a place attempting to carve out a new model for displaying and viewing photographs. There are no wall labels but a minimal catalog is available for each show.  Pier 24 blurs the line between a traditional gallery or museum by neither charging admission nor offering any works for sale. Calling itself a “place to view and think about photography ” Pier 24 succeeds in devoting the attention and respect to photography that the rest of the fine art world has enjoyed for centuries. Too many museum visitors he believes spend more time looking at labels than at art. ______________ Carol Doda attended the San Francisco Art Institute and worked as waitress and lounge entertainer at the Condor Club at the corner of Broadway and Columbus in the North Beach section of San Francisco. Doda's act began with a grand piano lowered from the ceiling by hydraulic motors; Doda would be atop the piano dancing. She descended from a hole in the ceiling --- --- --- On June 19 1964 when Doda was approximately 27 years old the Condor's publicist "Big" Davy Rosenberg gave Doda a "monokini" topless swimsuit designed by Rudi Gernreich. She performed topless that night the first noted entertainer of the era to do so. The act was an instant success. Two months after she started the rest of San Francisco's Broadway was topless followed soon after by entertainers across America. Doda had became an American cultural icon
