CaptionCajamarca Carnival is unrivalled in Peru Preparations begin months in advance. At home food and "chicha" maize liquor are prepared to receive relatives friends and visitors. The different city neighborhoods -the carnival queens and representatives from across Peru all parade their floats and and their costumes and prepare decorative motifs for the allegorical floats which carry their beautiful carnival queens. --- --- --- Cajamarca’s carnival songs are a particular hallmark of the event and are usually extremely risqué very funny and sung to pleasant simple melodies. These songs are listened to year-round by locals looking forward to the next carnival season. People douse each other with water using balloons and buckets. Everybody sings and dances to the rhythm of the "tarolas" snare drums in squares and parks while they wait for the arrival of "Ño Carnavalon" the King Momo of pleasure and happiness. The riotously colourful celebrations peak on Carnival Sunday and Monday with vivid parades and the traditional "burial of carnival" takes place on Ash Wednesday. --- --- --- The carnival doesn't even end there! Until the beginning of Lent Cajamarca is invaded by the Parada de Unsha a parade of trees adorned with fruit gifts and colourful decorations around which people dance in a semi-heathen fashion drink chicha and consume local delicacies. ___________________ Primera Dama asistió a lanzamiento del carnaval Cajamarquino By Presidencia Perú This photo was taken on February 4 2012 using a Canon EOS 5D Mark II. http://www.flickr.com/photos/65990097@N03/6818576079/ License Some rights reserved
