| IPTC INFO | | Caption | For a quarter of a century Museum Mile Festival has opened the doors of its nine museums for free every second Tuesday of June rain or shine to over one million visitors becoming one of New York City's most significant cultural traditions and one of its most popular cultural events. Fifth Avenue is closed to traffic for the entire length of the mile live bands musicians and street performers create the biggest block party In New York where people are encouraged to explore the full range of museum offerings along the Mile. Attendance at the event has grown steadily attesting to its popularity. In the course of the evening nearly 50 000 people visit the nine museums and "walk-the-mile." In celebration of its centennial year The Jewish Museum will host this year's opening ceremony at 5:45pm on the steps of its landmark building on the corner of 92nd street. In addition to museum hopping the 2004 Museum Mile Festival will once again feature art-in-the street activities for kids of all ages which in past years have turned the mile into one huge festival of public art making! This year learn how to figure paint with a live model at the National Academy of Design paint chalk murals with East Harlem native street artist and muralist James De La Vega or learn German in 10 minutes at the Goethe-Institut. New York City has officially designated Fifth Avenue from 82nd to 105th streets Museum Mile because of the vast richness and cultlural diversity of the nine museum along the avenue.
