It is important to pass on our rich heritage that we as a people can be proud of as well as to educate people of different backgrounds regarding these traditions. Brooklyn Jumbies Inc. is comprised of young men and women who are striving to reach uplift educate and provide a positive direction for the youth of today and the future. Brooklyn Jumbies Inc. performs stilt dancing which is one of the numerous cultural elements of the African and Caribbean Diaspora. The founding members of Brooklyn Jumbies Inc. are Ali Sylvester and Najja Codrington. They are well aware that “a people without a culture is like a tree without roots.” Our culture has been systematically taken away from us. Brooklyn Jumbies Inc. has made it one of their goals to help revive knowledge respect and pride in our traditions.
