For just a few weeks each summer these oddly shaped but beloved delta-bred red natives come to market and they are incredibly good eating by themselves in a great salad or as part of some to-die-for Creole concoction. To welcome Creoles back to the tables of South Louisiana the French Market down on Decatur Street in the French Quarter throws a one-day party- The Creole Tomato Festival - Saturday June 12 beginning at noon and running till 8 that evening. Look for music from the Algiers Jazz Band Lafourche Cajun Band Storyville Stompers Brass Band Chris Burke and His New Orleans Music and Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers. They’ll be playing at scattered sites along the stretch of the Market which runs from Jackson Square all the way downriver to Barracks Street. But Creoles have the center stage and rightly so when Chef-stars Jonathan Wright of Windsor Court Corbin Evans of Lulu’s in the Garden and Xavier Laurentino of Laurentino’s Restaurant will demonstrate the finer points of cooking with these juiciest of juicy fruits. Boxes and baskets of just-picked Creoles are for sale and French Market craft vendors offer all sorts of treasures galore besides. There’s a rumor that Creole tomato seedlings with a perfect pedigree will also be for sale.
