CaptionRyde Carnival is reputed to be the oldest established carnival is England beginning with Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee of 1887. ***** The 1950’s were the finest years for Ryde Carnival. The mile long parade complete with the “Giants of Ryde”. These were giant heads with suitably attired bodies rising to 12 feet 4 meters in height. The 10 heads were imported from Nice Carnival In 1960 the procession consisted of about 100 tableaux nine bands and 1500 competitors that drew a crowd of 20 000 to cheer it on its way. ***** The next decade showed a small decline in interest as it became very difficult to run in fact there came a period when it looked like the Association might cease to exist. A regeneration began in 2000 when carnival projects were developed by the Isle of Wight Council Arts Unit with support from Kinetika Arts International Masquerade 2000 Mahogany Arts Rampage and the Isle of Wight Councils own Carnival Arts officer Frankie Goldspink. These carnival arts projects increased enthusiasm within the town the carnival has grown significantly over the last five years. In 2003 & 2004 the Illuminated procession took place before a large crowd estimated at over 45 000
