IPTC INFO
CaptionThe news arrived at the JungleDrums office on Saturday the 23rd June 2005. A member of staff at The Observer revealed that the newspaper was printing a story about the identity of the man killed at close range by the police the day before. It looked like he was Brasilian. Jean Charles de Menezes had been killed by the police as he was running late for work. The news left us deeply shocked – we felt vulnerable and plagued by unanswerable questions After receiving confirmation JungleDrums mounted a journalistic operation unprecedented in the history of the magazine. Our adrenaline levels only started to lower again by the early hours of the next day and we went home certain that this had only been the beginning. What came next was also unprecedented. A voiceless community immediately started to get mobilized organizing protests and demonstrations demanding answers and criticizing the British police’s controversial shoot-to-kill policy. It’s this climate of tension along with the recent terrorist attacks on the public transport system the increasing number of armed police on the street and the fear gnawing at the general public that is transforming the world’s multicultural capital into an instable unpleasant place to live in. For now the incessant sirens wailing across London don’t look like fading away any time soon. Juliano Zappia
