CaptionThe House of the Tragic Poet contains some of the best art of Pompeii. It is named after the Carnaval like scene of this mosaic. Found in the tablinium of the modest sized house it shows actors performing a satyr drama as shown by the goatskin costumes worn by the two actors on the left. A coreuta tries out a double flute in the middle the choirmaster wearing a himation sits on a stool on the right and in the background a servant helps an actor to dress. Three striking masks get ready to create their magic.
