CaptionDecember 11 2006 BBC - Ploermel a historic town in Bretagne Brittany has found itself at the centre of a row after erecting a huge bronze statue of Pope John Paul II in a central square. The 8.75m-tall 29 ft statue was presented to Ploermel by controversial Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli. Speaking at its inauguration on Sunday Ploermel's mayor [Paul Anselin] said the monument marked described John Paul II as "a giant of the 20th Century who participated in the fall of the Iron Curtain". About 1 000 people watched as the statue - which shows the late Pope standing in prayer beneath an arch topped by a cross - was unveiled local police said. _____________ Zurab Tsereteli Russian: Зураб Константинович Церетели; Georgian: ზურაბ წერეთელი; born January 4 1934 in Tbilisi is a Russo-Georgian painter sculptor and architect best known for the Victory monument at the Moscow War Memorial and the statue of Peter the Great in downtown Moscow which at 141.8 and 94 meters respectively are the second and third tallest statues in the world. _________ The statue sparks protests regarding the separation of church and state and a law suit since thrown out.
