IPTC INFO
CaptionOne of the greatest early influences on the syncretic New World Carnaval tradition was the extravagant Mardi Gras costume balls. This was particularly the case in today's Carnaval motherlands of Port of Spain Trinidad & Tobago as well as New Orleans USA. ________ In 1699 French explorer Iberville and his men explored the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico. On a spot 60 miles south of the present location of New Orleans they set up camp on the river’s West Bank. Knowing that the day March 3 was being celebrated as a major holiday in Paris they christened the site Point du Mardi Gras. ____________ In 1783 the French brought their culture customs and Carnival in the form of elaborate masquerade balls to Trinidad along with African slaves. As in the present day the period stretching between Christmas and the start of Lent was a time for feasting fancy dress balls and celebration for both the French and British. It was during that era the present Carnival saw its genesis. Banned from the festivities slaves in the barrack yards would hold their own celebrations mimicking their masters’ behaviour while incorporating rituals and folklore.
