IPTC INFO
CaptionSo named because construction started on January 6 1598 the day of the Three Wise Men this fort with its gleaming white castellated walls complete with replica cannons stands watch where the Rio Potengi flows into the Atlantic Ocean. It is well worth a look although it is a bit of a hike to get to and contains within its walls everything you might expect to find in a fort that is over 400 years old - jail cells crews quarters a gunpowder room gift shop and the three wise men perched beside the well. Pay a small fee to enter and enjoy your visit. --- --- ---- The fortress was built in 1 598 using wood stones sand and whale oil; it was the first bulding in Natal. The designer Gaspar de Samperes adopted the conventional design for a maritime fortress: a five corners stars. In 12th December 1 633 the fortress was taken over by the Dutch who stayed until January of 1 654 when the Portuguese helped by the indians regained the place. --- --- --- Forte de Reis Magos or Three Wise Men Fort stands at the mouth of the Potengi River separated from Natal by a sand bar that is covered by high tides.
