| IPTC INFO | | Caption | Maria da Graça "Xuxa" Meneghel is famous in Brazil as the host of a long-running variety show for children. She was born Maria da Graça Meneghel on March 27 1963 in the Brazilian town of Santa Rosa. She was the youngest of seven children. Her brother gave here the nickname Xuxa. At the age of seven she moved with her family to Rio de Janerio. At the age of 16 she began modeling and got so many offers she signed with the Ford Modeling Agency in New York. 1982 was the start of her TV career. She graced the centerfold of Playboy in the December 1982 Brazilian edition which led to a role in a movie. In 1989 she established the Xuxa Meneghel Foundation which feeds shelters and educates impoverished children. She also spearheaded a campaign that resulted in 90% of all Brazilizn children being immunized against polio. Unabashedly sexy host of her own children's TV show featuring Xuxa singing and dancing with her cadre of teen helpers known as "Paquitas" visits from celebrities and other colorful hijinks.
