| IPTC INFO | | Caption | The Zodiac. The word Zodiac comes to us from the Greek work zoidiakos meaning little animal sign. In Latin this became zodiacus. Ancient star gazers imagined outlines of stars forming constellations stars grouped together with each other. They divided the ecliptic Earth's orbit around the Sun into 12 zodiacal signs. This made their job of noting positions of the Sun Moon and planets easier by giving them reference points of measure: the stars. We still use these 12 signs today. They are Aries the Ram Taurus the Bull Gemini the Twins Cancer the Crab Leo the Lion Virgo the Virgin Libra the Scales Scorpio the Scorpion now called Scorpius by astronomers Sagittarius the Archer Capricorn the Goat Aquarius the Water Bearer and Pisces the Fish. Constellation boundaries have changed over the centuries. ***** The Vedic texts have astronomical dates that some have claimed go back to the 5th millennium BC. The use of Vedic Sanskrit continued up to the 6th century BC. Vedic is synonymous with Aryans and Hinduism. ***** When Alexander the Great conquered all of Persia and Egypt and advanced all the way into northwest India Greek became the dominant language not only for official purposes but also for any purpose that involved communicating from one ethnic area to another. ***** The monumental astrological knowledge of the Babylonians is one of prehistory's great mysteries. Most do not think India was the source but perhaps the future will tell. | | Headline | Zodiac wheel first originated in ancient Babylonia [Iraq today] | | Copyright Notice | Dr Shepherd Simpson Galactic Astrologer | | URL | http://www.geocities.com/astrologyprinciples/zodiacwheel.htm | | User | Guest |
