IPTC INFO
CaptionThe term Murga first shows up in the Rio Plato region in 1906. The Buenos Aires style Murga Porteños first became popular in the 1920s in the San Telmo district of Buenos Aires. Neighborhoods began organizing costumed parades during carnival season. By the 1940’s Murga Porteño style carnaval was embraced city wide. During the 1950’s and 60’s the Murga Porteños groups were all male. The lyricists singers dancers and bombistas of these decades are still considered masters of the genre. The 1970’s marked a turning point in the history of Murga Porteños. Female artist began to make their presence felt. Just as the women were beginning to make their mark on this art form social conditions changed in Argentina. This change would drive the Murga Porteño's underground. The militarization of Buenos Aires society during the 1970’s was also reflected in the murga tradition which has always acted as a mirror of society. Some groups become mafia like social clubs which resulted in episodes of violence. The artistic and folkloric side was deemphasized.
