IPTC INFO
CaptionIn the province of Corrientes the carnival tradition dates back to the nineteenth century [before the War of the Triple Alliance 1864 to 1870]. --- --- --- Carnival was first celebrated on a large scale in the early 1960s . The Brazilian influence is evident in the costume design and organization of the parades molded around the style of Brazilian influenced Argentinian samba schools. --- --- --- The city of Corrientes calls itself the National Carnaval Capital and features a Grand Parade in a Rio Sambodromo like structure they call the Corsódromo --- --- --- While Corrientes retains elements of Rio Carnaval such as large baterias [percussion orchestras or drum sections] Reinas [Queens] of the baterias the Porto Bandeira and Mestre Sala they are also much more likely to experiment with their own choreography among many small costumed groups making up their samba school sections. There clearly a great passion by participants to excel at their seasonal dance numbers dedicated to the glory of their Carnaval performance. These comparsas consider their art form "dance theater" and devote many hours of practice in the weeks and months leading up to the Carnaval. --- --- --- Although there are large drum sections favoring samba and Brazilian classics the Corrientes Carnaval music makes much room for other popular song mixes. This music is performed by excellent bands on top of a carrosa carriage featuring strong singers and backup stingers tight horn sections guitars and anything else which will add to the impact of the familiar song mix. --- --- --- There is also a strong emphasis on the beauty of the female body with a concentration of strikingly attractive women to rival any Carnaval or event in the world. Their costumes tend to show plenty of flesh but are often enhanced by gigantic backpacks of colorful feathers symmetrically arranged tall feathered bejeweled headdresses and elaborate magnificent bikinis
